Stainless Steels 304 / 304L / 304H Weldability

Back To Weldability Alloys

Fabrication of Stainless Steels 304 / 304L / 304H should be done only with tools dedicated to stainless steel materials. Before using, tooling and work surfaces must be cleaned. To avoid cross contamination precautions are necessary. Stainless Steels can easily corroded metals that may discolour the surface of the fabricated product. Fusion welding performance for Stainless steel 304 is magnificent both with and without fillers. Suggested filler rods and electrodes for stainless steel 304 is grade 308 stainless steel. Filler 308L is recommended for 304L. Post-weld annealing might be required in heavy welded sections. 304L stainless steel not required this step. If post-weld heat treatment is not possible, Grade 321 might be utilized. Alloy 304H can be promptly welded by most standard processes. After welding Alloy 304H it might be important to anneal the plate to restore the corrosion resistance lost by sharpening to intergranular corrosion when chromium carbides precipitate in the grain boundaries in the weld heat- influenced zone.
