Alloy 440-SS Weldability

Back To Weldability Alloys

Grade 440 Stainless Steels are pre-heated at 250°C during welding followed by full annealing. To achieve a high hardness weld Grade 420 filler rods can be utilized. Grade 309 or 310 filler rods will, provide soft welds, having high ductility. 440B / 440C alloy is not commonly welded because of its tendency to air harden. If it must be welded, preheat to 500 F (260 C) and post weld treat at 1350-1400 F (732-760 C) for 6 hours followed by a slow furnace cooling to avoid cracking. Alloy 440A / 440B / 440C use high heat inputs and similar filler metal during operations.
